Consult with the Building Department
before undertaking Home Improvements
With the advent of spring, this is the
perfect time to consider home improvements. The Township recommends
that before undertaking any home improvement to please contact the Code
Enforcement Office to see what, if any permits, are required. Under
the Uniform Construction Code NJAC 5:23-2.31, The code enforcement
office is required to issue penalties for failure to obtain permits.
Please call them at 973-428-2462 to find out if permits are required.
It should be noted that obtaining a
permit is just part of the equation. Final payment to the contractor
should NOT be made until you receive all PRIOR approvals for the work
and obtain a certificate of approval or occupancy. N.J. Division of
Consumer Affairs rule NJAC 13:45A-16.2(a)10.ii indicates,” Final
payment to the contractor is not required to be made before a final
inspection is performed”.
If you have a construction permit that
has not received final inspection, certificate of approval or occupancy,
please contact the Code Enforcement Office at your earliest convenience.
Failure to close open permits will impede the sale of your home, so
please make sure your permits have received final inspection and
approval.
