PREPARATION OF COMMINGLED CONTAINERS FOR CURBSIDE COLLECTION

MATERIAL TYPE

DEFINITION

PREPARATION

GLASS BOTTLES
AND JARS

Clear, brown, green glass bottles and jars - DO NOT include mirrors, drinking glasses, light bulbs, ceramic or window glass.

Follow the preparation guidelines below for all glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles(#1 and #2 only), aluminum cans and steel cans.

PLASTIC BOTTLES

        

               

Look for the #1 or #2 on the bottom of bottles only. A bottle is distinguished from other containers by a pourable mouth and/or a neck.

DO NOT include any plastic that is not a bottle: no toys, no buckets, no plastic bags, no lids...

Remove cap/lid. Put metal cap/lid into recycling container. Put plastic cap/lid into trash.

ALUMINUM CANS

Non-magnetic metal food and beverage cans. Must be rinsed and cleaned of all food and liquid waste.

DO NOT include foil wrap, plates or pans.

Rinse all bottles and cans (empty aerosol and paint cans do not need to be rinsed).

STEEL CANS

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Magnetic, steel, ferrous, tin, bi-metal food and beverage cans

Aerosol cans must be empty. Plastic caps must be removed (plastic nozzles may remain). If aerosol container malfunctions and cannot be emptied, place in trash, or if it contains hazardous materials, save for next county household hazardous waste day.

EMPTY, DRY and OPEN paint cans (from both latex and oil-based paints). No liquid may remain in the can. Steel lid must be removed, but may be placed in bin with other containers.

Step on plastic bottles and metal cans to conserve space (do not step on aerosol and paint cans).

Place glass, plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans together in one container. Do NOT use or include plastic or paper bags.

The only types of plastic which are acceptable for recycling are BOTTLES with a 1 or 2 on the bottom. Do NOT recycle any other plastic items.

NEWSPAPER

Includes the glossy inserts. Only those which are included with the newspaper. DO NOT include any other type of paper with newspaper

Bundle and tie. Keep separate from all other paper.

DO NOT place in paper or plastic bags.

Keep newspaper separate from all other paper.

Tie Newspaper in bundles. Do NOT place newspaper in bags.

ALL OTHER PAPER:

MIXED PAPER

Includes magazines, junk mail, envelopes, slick paper, books with hard covers removed, non-foil/ non-metallic gift wrap, carbonless paper, fax paper, manila folders.

DO NOT include phone books or carbon paper.

Place mixed paper, corrugated cardboard, gray/brown chip/ paperboard and brown paper bags together in a reusable container or in a brown paper bag. Flatten all boxes.

DO NOT use or include plastic bags.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD

Ridged cardboard containers used for shipping

If corrugated cardboard is too large to fit in container or brown paper bag, then flatten and tie.

GRAY/BROWN CHIPBOARD/
PAPERBOARD

Thick brown or gray board (for example cereal boxes, gift boxes, notebook backings, egg cartons, cores from paper towels).

DO NOT include cardboard six/twelve-pack holders from beer, soda, etc. These packs are coated to prevent breakage when wet and some have a metallic coating.

Remove any food residue.

BROWN PAPER BAGS

Heavy, brown, craft grocery bags.

Fold and place in one brown bag. (See mixed paper preparation.)

 

All materials must be at curb the night before collection day. Please apply the decals shown to the left to your containers to identify the material they contain. Call the town to obtain the decals at no cost.

If you have a problem with collection, you must call the town office no later than 10:00 a.m. on the morning following collection day.
