In 1968, the NJ State Legislature passed a law that authorized
but did not require municipalities to set conservation
commissions. The law made these commissions advisory
bodies on natural resource planning and protection, and open
space.
In 1972 the law was amended to expand the commissions
responsibility to environmental issues which included
pollution prevention and control, solid waste management,
noise control, and environmental appearance.
The Commissions do not make laws and do not have
enforcement authority. Their primary goal is to review and
advise the governing bodies about matters that have a
potential to impact the environment in the municipality.
The Commission must work with many of the various departments
or governing organizations within the township including; The
Planning Board, The Board of Adjustment, The Township
Committee, The Health Department, to name few.
Equally important is the Commissions responsibility to keep
the public educated and informed about local and regional
matters that affect the environment. This last point is
the reason we have established this web site which we believe
will allow us to reach each citizens and provide them with
useful and timely information.
We will do everything possible to make and keep the site
informative and up to date. Please visit us on a regular
basis and remember - One person can make a difference!
